Waste Incineration: Our Melbourne Plant

At Ace Waste, we utilise High-Temperature Incineration facilities, which represent the regulatory and environmentally sound disposal option for clinical waste/medical waste and other waste streams.

4 min read

In addition to our first waste incineration facility (located in Willawong, Brisbane, QLD), we are incredibly proud of our waste management plant in Victoria. It features the largest high-temperature incinerator in the country. In fact, it is a benchmark for waste incineration in Australia overall. Read on to discover more about our medical waste incinerator in Melbourne.

Incineration plant design (VIC)

Located in Dandenong South (in Melbourne), our conveniently positioned and innovatively designed waste depot allows for the secure and complete destruction of waste, including sharp waste and  hazardous waste incineration. This is on behalf of public, private and governmental sectors in all areas of Victoria and beyond.

Not only is it the nation’s largest, but our high-temperature waste incineration plant, is also the most modern and leading-edge specimen of its kind to be found anywhere across the eastern seaboard. We recently added a new receival and treatment facility and are planning investments in infrastructure to consistently boost our premises.

Location: Dandenong South, VIC.

Type: Stepped hearth incinerator

Capacity: 1500kg/hr or 36 tonnes per day.

Currently treats: Medical waste (clinical and related waste), pharmaceutical waste, hazardous waste, biosecurity (quarantine) waste, solvents, oily rags, cartridges and more prescribed industrial wastes.

Vital stats: Since it began operations in 2009, this site has seen the destruction of upwards of 21,000 tonnes of waste.

Why waste incineration is better than landfill

Clinical Waste Disposal Melbourne

The powerful capability of our Melbourne waste incineration facility includes our being able to provision the safe disposal of clinical waste and to do so meticulously and without exception. This is of great relevance, given that the Victoria EPA operational guidance states that methods other than incineration are only suitable for treating some forms of clinical and related wastes.

Addressing the issue of pathogens

Alternatives to high-temperature incineration, such as autoclave-landfill or treatment-landfill, fail to destroy the clinical waste stream in its entirety (especially being able or approved for disposal of pharmaceutical and cytotoxic substreams). This can also lead to an issue with pathogens.

Whilst bacteria is often targeted by alternative treatment landfill methods, not all pathogens can be destroyed via these processes. It is alarming from both a biological and ecological standpoint that pathogens can lie dormant in the earth after being disposed of in landfill (with the risk of leachate leaking into our waterways).

Only high-temperature incineration can completely eliminate these dangerous microorganisms, (alongside all forms of clinical and related waste). Naturally, this is enabled by our Melbourne waste management plant, as well as our analogous Brisbane-based facility.

High-Temperature Incineration & COVID-19 Waste

Given the ongoing concern of COVID-19 (including the fact that the virus is shed in wastewater), the need for this solution is made even more apparent in relation to healthcare waste/medical waste. High-temperature incineration is a method that can more than adequately dispose of all Coronavirus related paraphernalia.

This includes single-use masks, gloves, eye protection, gowns and more. Perhaps most importantly, high-temperature waste incineration will obliterate any trace of pathogens contained in or on these materials. These types of COVID-related items and by-products are disposed of at our waste depot in Victoria, as well as in Brisbane.

Mitigating risks in waste segregation & categorisation

Not only that, but traditional landfill methods may also require these hazardous forms of clinical and related wastes to be segregated at the source. This can be a time consuming and costly exercise. However, it’s one that is critical to get right, for the welfare of the public and the environment.

For those who are typically tasked with waste segregation, it can also be inherently risky. This applies to industry owners and operators such as practice managers, doctors and dentists etc. It is a liability that is enhanced; should these individuals be lacking a thorough understanding of the many waste streams. Plus, their associated stipulations for waste management compliance.

Understanding different waste classifications

Legislative requirements and terminology in waste disposal and management can be very complex. They can also vary according to where the operator is located, ie. according to the specific State Government. Therefore, the feeling of being ill-equipped to properly shoulder waste management responsibilities is, quite understandably, a fairly common occurrence.

Of course, when you take into consideration that most medical professionals are typically kept busy with other tasks far more pressing than their waste-related responsibilities, you can see just how easily mistakes in waste segregation can happen. One example is the handling and disposal of pharmaceutical waste, which often gets (improperly) caught up in the clinical waste stream.

When you have access to services rendered via our high-temperature incinerator at Ace Waste Victoria (and also Brisbane) you can rely on expertise from our trained staff and consequently unburden all of your waste segregation requirements.
