Statement by Ace Waste
Ace Waste incinerates the following types of waste at its Willawong facility:
- Clinical and related waste (including cytotoxic and anatomical waste)
- Pharmaceutical waste
- Quarantine waste
- Document waste
Ace Waste presently meets the clinical waste needs of several of the major public and private hospitals in South East Queensland and provides an essential service to these facilities.
It should be noted that the only approved method for disposal of cytotoxic waste and pharmaceutical waste is high temperature incineration (Schedule 5 of The Environmental Protection (Waste Management) Regulation).
Although Ace Waste’s Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) licence covers a broad range of wastes, the only waste streams Ace Waste chooses to incinerate are those stated above. Ace Waste does not incinerate chemicals, tyres, sewage sludge, oils.
Ace Waste operates its incinerator on cycles of 21 days (24 hours per day) with approximately 12 days shutdown for scheduled maintenance as required by DERM.
As part of the conditions of Ace Waste’s DERM licence, the high temperature incineration facility is monitored 24 hours per day 7 days per week via direct modem link to that department. It should be noted that this condition was an Ace Waste initiative to assist in ensuring that all requirements in regard to emissions and plant operation were fully met.
Apart from this 24 hours per day 7 days per week monitoring by DERM, Ace Waste also submits to that department the results of emission tests conducted by an independent NATA approved laboratory on a 6 monthly basis. In addition the company also submits data to the National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) on an annual basis. Ace Waste has been a participant in the NPI since 2001.
In 16 years of operation Ace Waste has an incident free track record.
